I’m a 25 year old husband and fire fighter who loves personal finance. I’ve been involved with saving for retirement since I was 14, seriously. I learned a lot about money from my parents and I have now had the chance to work with my money for several years.
I also received a degree in Business Management from Abilene Christian University in 2007. I have taken several real estate and loan officer classes after college as well as all the schooling I had to do for my career. I am planning on taking more classes in the future to help myself and you.
My Financial Journey
Growing up, I was able to spend time learning about money from my parents. My Dad loves business and has worked very hard at it and so I learned some things from him. I raised and sold goats as a kid to save up enough money to start a Roth IRA at 14 for my retirement. I learned about net income by him showing me how much money was made minus how much we spent. I was put in charge of a checking account as a kid so I could learn how banks worked and to make me responsible for my own money. These are just some of the things that have helped me develop my financial thoughts on my journey.
After I went to college, I got married to the most wonderful woman in the world. Between us we had about $5,000 in credit card debt and around $60,000 in school debt. I tried doing any job that came around while I went to Fire Academy.
We finally realized that we were spending lots of money just keeping our debt. A friend of mine had a Dave Ramsey CD and so I listened to a few of them and heard about the debt snowball idea. Using this as our game plan we systematically applied it to our credit card debt. As of right now, we have ZERO revolving credit card debt. Anything we put on the card is paid off every month. The only thing left for us is school loans and hopefully someday we’ll get our house loan paid off.
I am a mid twenties kinda guy and I like to write about things based on my experience and what I know. So a lot of the things I write might make good sense to another mid twenties kinda person, but a lot of this information is really helpful to people of all ages. It’s better late than never and it’s definitely the sooner the better.
